Shackleton Epic
EPIC is the word of the week now that the crew of Shackleton Epic are safe and sound on board Australis. The team has had had a little time to recover from their ordeal – Tim says his right foot is recovering (it was ivory white yesterday) and only two of his toes are still numb and the tissue looks good!
Australis is now heading to King Haakon Bay to retrieve the Alexandra Shackleton – at a later date she will be taken back to King George Island and put back in the cradle for safe passage on the Polar Pioneer back to Europe.
The team will now head to Grytviken, site of Shackleton’s grave to rendezvous on 13th with The Hon. Alexandra Shackleton, our patron and Sir Ernest’s granddaughter. There they will toast ‘the Boss’ with a mug or two of Mackinlay’s Old Malt Scotch. Alexandra, or ‘Zaz’ as she is known to her friends, is travelling and speaking on board an Antarctic cruise ship and she is bringing the group of passenger’s ashore to meet Tim, Nick, Paul, Baz, Seb and Ed and celebrate their achievement. What a great way to honour the memory of The Boss and the boys…an instant audience of admirers.
Then it will be back to the Falkland Islands, before flying ‘home’ to the UK. Over the next week we’ll continue to post updates and Jo’s blog as well as feature stories about or authored by the team!
