Maserati is lying second, slowed down by the light winds Giovanni Soldini and his team now 800 miles off Honolulu
Maserati continues to grapple with less than ideal wind conditions of around 10 knots. Giovanni Soldini and his team are currently lying second, 800 miles from Honolulu. Two consecutive days of light breezes allowed the Australian 100’ Ragamuffin to overtake the Italian boat and establish a 150-mile lead on her. “We’re fighting as hard as we can,” says Soldini. “Unfortunately, from the very outset, we knew that Ragamuffin would fare better in light breezes. But now we’re expecting the wind to rise a bit and stabilise between 10-15 knots so that that will up Maserati’s pace.” The Transpac 2013 is a 2,225-nautical mile crewedrace from Los Angeles to Honolulu, and is open to both multi- and monohull yachts. The start took place off rugged Point Fermin, San Pedro, Los Angeles, and the finish-line is positioned off the Diamond Head Lighthouse, east of Honolulu, on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. The other yachts in the VOR 70 Maserati’s Class 1 are: Bad Park (STP65), Invisible Hand (R/P 63), Medicine Man (Andrews 63) and Wizard (RP 74), all American, the Australian boat Ragamuffin (Elliot 100) and Peligroso (Kernan 70) from Mexico. Aside from skipper Soldini, Maserati has a further crew of eight (Guido Broggi, John Elkann, Carlos Hernandez, Boris Herrmann, Gwen Riou, Corrado Rossignoli, Michele Sighel, Jianghe “Tiger” Teng)
