Zurn Yacht Designs studio is happy to celebrate 200 MJM builds with 6 new 50z’s delivered. Zurn Yacht Design, MJM Yachts’ Bob Johnstone (of J Boats fame), and Boston Boatworks have teamed up to create a very unique line of powerboats. MJM 50Z M/Y Zing is on display at Yachts Miami Beach 2016 (11-15 February 2016) on Collins Avenue Ramp 4; Downeast Cove 7-8.
Beginning with the 2003 MJM 34z debut, they set out to establish new standards in design, construction and performance. All MJM yachts are designed from the ground up to be efficient and practical; featuring easily driven, light-weight hulls, modern propulsion, and inviting accommodations. The MJM50z is the largest in the fleet by a full ten feet and comes with your choice of either twin or triple Volvo Penta IPS600s.
MJM 50z fuel efficiency is extraordinary: 0.9 nm/g at 25 knots and, at the same 8 knots a trawler would travel, one could go to Bermuda and back without refueling. The sleek profile and low center of gravity make it exceptionally safe, seaworthy and fun to drive. MJM 50z takes offshore performance to another level with Doug Zurn’s modified deep-V hulls, which allow instant response to the helm without bow steer or bury in large waves, all the while keeping guests dry. A low center of gravity and narrow beam with chine flats redirect wave and wake energy outward and downward to dampen roll in a seaway. The narrower hull shape slices through waves instead of slamming into them.
The high-tech lamination schedule that’s employed by forward-thinking builder Boston Boat Works incorporates lightweight, strength, and stiffness. Boston Boat Works builds all of the MJM models, and uses wet-preg Kevlar and E-glass fabric over a Corecell closed-cell foam core. This thermoset resin cures at a high temperature, and the chemical reaction transforms the laminate into a very durable, temperature-resistant, exceptionally stiff, and extremely lightweight structure. Vacuum-bagged wet-preg laminates avoid inconsistencies in the resin-to-fabric ratio, which creates a stronger and lighter boat, and the wet-preg construction process reduces the emission of dangerous volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
MJM Yachts gets its engineering expertise from Burke Design. Owner Steve Burke works closely with Boston Boat Works and Zurn Yacht Design, analyzing the Kevlar/e-glass composite laminates and structure to ensure that they comply with the new ISO (International Organization for Standardization) small-craft structural requirements. He also coordinates the effort to obtain CE mark certification for the boat and its systems for marketability worldwide. The MJM 40z and the 50z are the only boats of their type to have an ISO rating of A Ocean, the international standard’s toughest design category. It’s defined as the “category of boats considered suitable for seas of up to 7 meters (23 feet) significant wave height and winds of Beaufort Force 9 (41-47 knots) or less.”
The MJM 50z is very technically interesting, but more than this, her technology raises the owner’s level of enjoyment. The absence of wood on the exterior will reduce cleanup time at the end of a cruise and eliminates the expense of varnishing. Her light weight will make her accelerate and handle like a sports car, and at the same time, Zurn’s hull design (with an 18.5-degree transom deadrise) gives her a very sea-kindly ride. Zurns MJM designs are easier to maneuver around docks, fit in more slips, wait for fewer bridges and may be trucked between seasonal homes.
Bob Johnstone plays a very active role in model development and works closely with his partners at Boston Boat Works and Zurn Yacht Design to get the boats built. “We’re essentially their in-house design staff” – refers Doug Zurn, principal at Zurn Yacht Design. “It’s a more direct result if a designer is working with the builder on building a boat versus the designer just passing the design off and the builder has his staff interpret the designers’ thoughts —things get lost and the boat gets muddy. MJMs aren’t like that; they’re very clean. The input that comes from Bob through us to the builder is a very, very, straight path—a very clear path.”
MJM 50z is also easy to operate. You can dock the 50z solo, thanks to 360° visibility, joystick docking and a single level deck from the wheel aft to cockpit side-opening doors onto a floating dock. The Sealift hydraulic swim platform simplifies water access and will launch and retrieve a tender weighing up to 500 pounds. Lockers beneath the bridge deck side seating open to large stowage areas, with fuel tanks outboard and accessible.
The MJM 50z offers a multiuse layout for entertaining family picnics or cocktail parties on a single level deck. Plus, hospitable 24/7 staterooms for live-aboard cruising comfort (not just sleeping cabins). The galley and saloon area mimics your “Great Room” at home, with a dinette that converts to a guest berth with hi/lo table. A gently curving overhead and polished steel vertical pole for a handhold at the companionway give it a real sailboat feel. The 50z master cabin includes a desk/dressing table plus easy chair next to a large opening hull port for fresh air and view of the harbor to read, write, chat on the phone or just have one’s own space. Three more convertible berths are available on the bridge deck with privacy curtains, so entertaining overnight guests is a snap
Life aboard a new MJM 50z will be more enjoyable than on any other designs in the 48-50 foot class.
