Volvo Penta’s new D8-IPS premieres in the new Riviera 4800 Sport Yacht
Volvo Penta’s new D8-IPS800 has been selected to power Riviera’s new 4800 Sport Yacht, which has its world premiere at the Sydney International Boat Show this month. This is the first motor yacht in the world to be publicly launched with the new engine and IPS drive. Volvo Penta’s 8-liter marine engine will also be on display at the Australian show.
Australia’s leading luxury motor yacht builder, Riviera, has chosen Volvo Penta’s state-of-the-art Inboard Performance System (IPS) as the propulsion drive for its new 4800 Sport Yacht. Volvo Penta and Riviera have maintained a strong partnership for years, with more than 1000 IPS drives engineered into the marque’s highly awarded range of yachts.
“In 2008, Riviera eagerly embraced the industry-leading technology of Volvo Penta’s IPS system, recognizing that it offers superb performance, fuel efficiency and comfort for the luxury motor yacht enthusiast,” says Andrew Nicholson, head of Volvo Penta Oceania. “We are delighted to celebrate the global launch of our new engine and drive system with such an internationally renowned yacht builder. Our relationship with Riviera continues to grow each year and we are excited to be a part of the new 4800 Sport Yacht, which showcases our latest IPS technical innovations.”
Riviera’s new Sport Yacht can be equipped with either the Volvo Penta D8-IPS700 (twin D8 engines and IPS15 pod drives at 550hp) or the D8-IPS800 (600hp). Volvo Penta IPS has forward-facing counter-rotating propellers and pulls the yacht through the water as opposed to pushing it by conventional drive systems.
Volvo Penta key account manager Gavin Rooney says: “Introduction of the Volvo Penta D8-IPS700 and 800 engines accomodates a key segment in our marine leisure line-up. This exceptional package provides state-of-the-art fuel efficiency and classic Volvo Penta high torque at low RPMs for power boats in the 45-55 foot range.”
Cutting edge technology
Volvo Penta is widely regarded as a world-leader in complete, user-friendly power systems for the marine industry. Its new 8-liter engine expands the offer of its diesel products for applications that require low weight with high power.
“Fuel efficiency and low emissions – hallmarks of Volvo Penta’s engines – have been further improved with the D8 engine as a result of Volvo’s continued research and technical development programs,” says Rooney.
Luxury yachting
In addition to the installation of IPS, Riviera’s 4800 Sport Yacht is equipped with Volvo Penta’s ground-breaking Glass Cockpit and Electronic Vessel Control (EVC). These features offer full control of the boat from the helm to propeller.
Riviera’s chief executive, Wes Moxey, says the company is very proud to be at the forefront of a global marine revolution that is making boating even easier and more enjoyable.
“The evolution of IPS has completely changed the way we go boating and Volvo Penta’s continued refinement is setting new standards in handling, onboard comfort, dependability and maneuverability,” he says. “For the two-stateroom/two-bathroom 4800 Sport Yacht, we have developed a completely new hull with keel and it is the perfect match for both the new IPS15 pod-drives and new D8 engines.”
He adds: “Partnering with Volvo Penta for the world release of this powerful new IPS package – as part of the Riviera 4800 Sport Yacht’s World Premiere – affirms our position as a global leader in embracing innovative easy-to-use boating technology.”
Volvo Penta will be at berth 186 on the marine at the Sydney International Boat Show; Riviera will also be at the show in Australia, which opens on July 28.
