Where Wisdom Meets Waves: Heesen Announces Hull and Superstructure Joining for Project Sophia
Heesen Yachts is delighted to announce a significant milestone in the construction of YN 21150, code-named Project Sophia. On Wednesday, 26 June 2024, the hull and superstructure of this 50m fast cruising yacht were successfully joined, marking a pivotal step towards her completion.
Project Sophia exemplifies Heesen’s unparalleled expertise in building fast aluminium yachts with reduced fuel consumption. These qualities are also reflected in her sporty exterior lines designed by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects and a luxurious interior by Cristiano Gatto.
In Ancient Rome, the predictive power of a person’s name was captured by the proverb ‘nomen est omen’, meaning ‘the name is a sign’. In this case, the name Sophia is rich with meaning, resonating with the central idea of Hellenistic philosophy, embodying cleverness, skill, wisdom and intelligence. These attributes deeply align with the craftmanship and innovation Heesen brings to this 50m series.
Additionally, some may associate the name with the Academy Award-winning actress Sophia Loren, known for her charming beauty and incredible talent, mirroring the yacht’s pleasing aesthetics. On the occasion of the joining, we can also appreciate the technological beauty that typically resides below the waterline as the hull of Project Sophia emerges from Shed 6, where 20 to 40 skilled craftsmen have meticulously welded it. Heesen remains one of the few shipyards to construct its own aluminium hulls in-house, a tradition that underscores the company’s commitment to quality and precision.
Investing in the future of yacht building, Heesen places a strong emphasis on the training of its welders, who are indeed a rare find. Becoming a certified Heesen welder requires over 500 hours of intensive training provided by our specialized training team, ensuring that each weld meets the highest standards of excellence.
Project Sophia features a hard-chine shallow draft hull designed by Heesen’s in-house naval architects. With a draft of only 2.15 metres, thanks to the propeller tunnel recessed into the hull, she is perfect for cruising the crystal-clear water of the Bahamas. The sleek underwater body design enhances efficiency, making Project Sophia 12% more fuel-efficient compared to traditional designs. The two MTU engines, 16V 4000 M65L (IMO Tier III), have also been installed, allowing her to reach a top speed of 23 knots and a transatlantic range of 3,100 nautical miles at 11 knots.
This yacht offers unparalleled comfort and luxury, accommodating up to twelve guests in five elegantly appointed staterooms. The master suite on the main deck forward provides a serene retreat, while the four guest cabins on the lower deck ensure ample space for family and friends.
The interior design by Cristiano Gatto showcases a harmonious blend of sophistication, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. With a meticulous selection of materials, colours, and textures, Gatto creates a space that exudes a sense of refined luxury, reflecting the belief that wisdom permeates every aspect of life, including the art of interior design.
The interior design is available in two additional atmospheres, catering to a variety of tastes and preferences.
Just as the name Sophia resonates with wisdom, the interior design project named after it seeks to evoke a sense of intellectual depth and discernment. Through the integration of tasteful elements and thoughtful design choices, the essence of wisdom is reflected creating an atmosphere that fosters creativity, comfort, and beauty. Currently available for sale, Project Sophia is due for delivery in Q1 2026 and represents a unique opportunity to own a Dutch-quality yacht with a shortened delivery time.
