HERITAGE
For Nautor’s Swan, 48 is a magic number. One of the most iconic Swans ever was born in 1971 under this number: the mythical Swan 48. Designed by the best yacht designer of that time, indeed one of the best of all times, Sparkman & Stephens of New York, this iconic yacht won some of the most prestigious offshore races, like the Bermuda Race and Transatlantic Race and achieving selection for the Admiral’s Cup – the “Formula One” race series of that time. However, racing was not the main purpose of the boat: like any Swan, she was born to be a perfect family cruiser, capable of sailing around the world in total safety and comfort. Quoting from the original brochure: “With many international races behind her – the Swan 48 is keeping up an irresistible challenge as top class ocean racer. With the speed of a bird of prey she combines the luxury and grace which make her the swift, smooth-going Swan of tomorrow. The Swan 48 is equipped to the highest professional standards and the woodwork has the class given it by the Nautor specialists, men who have learnt their crafts around the Gulf of Bothnia, where woodwork and shipbuilding skills are traditional. The unique design and professional skills behind the Swan 48 make her the complete ocean cruising racer.” To prove this, 46 units were sold during five years of production. Following the same principles, in 1995 Germán Frers designed a new Swan 48 with the same level of grace and performance as the original one: another shining success, with 57 yachts built, now becoming beloved and highly regarded yachts on the brokerage market. Today, almost forty years after the original one, it’s time for another mythical Swan 48…
CONCEPT By Germán Frers “Like one every design coming out of our drawing board, the new Swan 48 has been designed with heart and passion, but rather than acting only on the flash of a moment of inspiration, this new Nautor model is the result of a rational brief, based on a market analysis and the experience of the builder, agents and designers, coordinated by Nautor’s Product Line Leader. One can safely say the Swan 48 is a new model created by the work of a team of experts, and she offers the best equipment and material specifications and solutions available in the market. The equipment and tanks are low in the bottom of the hull and close to the longitudinal centre of buoyancy. The angle of positive stability is in the order of 120 degrees. The displacement reflects the quality of the construction and the equipment dedicated to provide best comfort on board. A yacht that will be safe, a pleasure to sail, will have an easy motion at sea due to the form stability and moderate ballast of the three keel options available, standard, shallow and racing. Following the latest larger models, the new design shows no distortion on the stern sections, the deck beam has been carried all the way back to the transom in combination with a twin rudder arrangement. Positive control shallow rudder draft and extra sailing length are some of the advantages of this design. A well illuminated, massive interior volume where every one of the three cabins and two toilets, that include separate showers has been carefully developed in detail by the interior designer. On deck there are separate areas for relaxing and sail handling. All halyards and sails are controlled from the cockpit and the tails stowed in dedicated bins. Protection from the elements is given by the dodger mounted in combination with the bimini. The lazarette is large enough to accommodate and stow a fully inflated 2.80 meters tender. For the persons interested in racing at the Corinthian level there is a performance package offer available from Nautor, including a racing keel, a square top mainsail, carbon fibre mast and rigging, long bowsprit, upgraded deck gear together with recommendations to remove some of the cruising oriented equipment like the gen set” HULL Following the long experience made designing the recent generation of large yachts, starting from the astonishing Swan 115 all the way to the latest Swan 78 and 65, the naval architecture of the new Swan 48 takes advantage from thousand of miles sailed all over the world by her bigger sisters. The hull lines are designed by maestro Germán Frers as a combination of performance, comfort at sea and liveability on deck and inside the yacht. The result is first of all a timeless beauty – like only Frers is able to do – and a very wellbalanced hull, with a high righting moment given in combination by keel ballast and hull shapes. This brings unsuspected advantages while sailing: the hull is optimized to give max performance heeling at 20 degrees, leaving the boat comfortable and fully liveable at sea in any condition. The twin rudder configuration enhances the balance of the boat, preventing the broaching tendency and therefore giving back full sensitivity and pleasure while steering at full heeling angles. At the same time, the reduced draft of the double rudder blades increases the cruising ability, allowing access, together with the highly efficient T shaped contained draft keel, to shallow waters and smaller fishing harbours. On the racing scenario, the new 48, perfectly in line with Swan tradition, is conceived to be a winner. Waterlines are designed with performance in mind and the full package is set up for getting the best even by a non professional crew. For fans of top speed, a Performance Package, which includes performance keel, carbon mast allowing semi-square top mainsail, longer bowsprit and updated deck gear, is available on the option list. SAIL PLAN The leitmotiv of the latest generation of Swans is balance, and this is clearly visible in the sail plan. This goes together with the full naval architecture, to give the best combination between performance, safety and easy sailing. The mast well aft brings several advantages: a good balance between mainsail and jib, the latter being able to give good power sailing downwind, the possibility to set 4 different forestays – furling gennaker, Code 0, jib and staysail, and a well manageable mainsail, the stability of a wide spreader architecture. In addition, the standard bowsprit helps to bring further forward Code 0 and spinnaker tacks, enhancing performances in light conditions and making easier to fly and jibe the kites. Jib cars are conveniently positioned on top of the coachroof, with sheets passing under-deck and going straight to winches, making tacking easy and fast and keeping sideways clean and uncluttered. As an option, a self tacking track for staysail or jib is positioned in a dedicated recessed housing. Safety is always a priority on a Swan. For this, a special solution for the main sheet has been studied, to prevent the sheet crossing the whole cockpit and to reduce the danger resulting from of an accidental jibe.
DECK
Like always on a Swan, the deck plan has been designed for maximum efficiency, safety and comfort. But it is true that the deck, particularly the coachroof, is the most relevant part of a boat in terms of aesthetics and character. We at Nautor have always paid close attention to this and the wedge coahroof design has been a hallmark and reference point for the yachting world since its introduction, started in 1971 just with the original S&S designed Swan 48. The design of the new Swan 48 represents the third generation of wedge Swan coachroof – evolution from that original design. It is designed with a combination of soft curves and faceted surfaces, opening to a new style but still in the family feeling of bigger sisters Swan 65 and 78. It introduces also the “Eagle’s Eye” feature, a sort of long eyebrow that partially protect windows from direct sunlight and gives to the whole coachroof an intense gaze. A front window, which gives extra light to the owner cabin, is possible as an option. The cockpit, well protected by deep coamings for the whole length, has the typical Swan hallmark organization: forward area dedicated to guests, fully protected by sprayhood and bimini, central section where all the gear to handle the boat is concentrated, with all winches easily reachable by the helmsman, aft area dedicated to sunbathing and direct access to the sea via a large opening platform. As an option, the platform opens the access to the tender garage. Other areas are dedicated to comfort at sea, like the forward sunbathing area, with cushions well integrated into a recessed part of the coachroof.
INTERIOR By keeping a sense of classic style and elegance, Swan 48 offers an interior arrangement providing a clear feeling of space and volume. The three-cabin layout comprises the owner forward with a private head, a VIP cabin starboard and a guest cabin portside, both aft. The two heads are a statement of comfort and space, both with a fully separate shower compartment. Located at the centre of the boat, the main saloon is open wide, with a C shape sofa and natural light irradiating from three different levels, giving brightness to the whole space. The chart table on the starboard side, to be chosen in three different layouts: flipper style, forward facing with seat and storage or with table and sofa. The galley configuration offers freedom of movement at 360° in every condition, with a domestic size fridge and valuable volumes for storage. The soundproofed engine room guarantees good accessibility and includes a dedicated space for an optional genset For styling and finishing, Swan 48 features three different moods proposed by our interior designer Misa Poggi: Northern Light, which embodies the typical Swan style, Blue Eyes inspired by Scandinavian design, and Red Velvet, which reflects the warm atmosphere of the latin countries. These styles create a special atmosphere and energy, determined by the relationship between elements and materials.
