LAGOON 52: a major (r)evolution in cruising catamarans
Friday, 19 October, in Bordeaux, Lagoon presented the brand new Lagoon 52 to the press, attended by the team from the Lagoon design office, Massimo Gino (from the Italian Nauta Design agency) and Marc Van Peteghem (from the renowned naval architecture agency, VPLP, which has worked in partnership with Lagoon since the early days).
The Lagoon 52, the world leader’s latest baby, replaces its famed predecessor, the Lagoon 500, and marks a whole new era in cruising catamaran design.
Exterior lines and rigging: “the best of both worlds” by VPLP
“Thanks to the experience of competitive sailing, the architecture of current cruising catamarans has really changed a great deal, bringing nothing but advantages. For around the last ten years, we have gradually been moving the masts on our racing multihull boats further aft… but to do this on a cruising catamaran really makes the Lagoon 52 a forerunner” (Marc Van-Peteghem, VPLP). With its diamond-shaped vertical bows, bevelled hulls, as if levitated cabintop and high aspect rig, the Lagoon 52 stands out from the crowd. For the rigging, Lagoon decided to draw directly on the world of competitive sailing, and, therefore, on the experience of VPLP: moving the mast further aft enhances performance and makes the boat much easier to sail. The mainsail, which is narrower and lighter, is also higher, thus making the most of the better winds at the top. The large forward triangle means it is possible to use a large self-tacking genoa and choose between a number of different downwind sails depending on the individual sailing plans. Finally, the tilting steering wheel can be adjusted to three different positions, giving the skipper perfect visibility under sail or when manoeuvring.
Interiors: light, space, comfort… by Nauta Design
” …Our main objective has been to improve the use of space, while providing the Lagoon 52 with sober, bright and comfortable living spaces, … and to provide the “just like home” feeling for the guests on board.…the main emphasis is on creating continuity between life below deck and life on deck, on having a good view of the surrounding environment and natural light flooding in below deck.” Massimo Gino (Nauta Design). Nauta Design chose geometric, mainly horizontal forms, warm, luxurious materials, and optimised use of space for this new boat. Depending on individual requirements, the Lagoon 52 is available with 3, 4 or 5 cabins, each with ensuite bathroom and separate shower.
The Lagoon 52 will be on display for the first time at the Miami International Boat Show, from 14 to 18 February 2013, followed by the Multihull Boat Show at La Grande Motte (10 to 14 April 2013).
