Summit Motoryachts, a division of The Kadey-Krogen Group, expands product offering with Volvo Penta IPS propulsion systems in addition to straight shafts.

Summit Motoryachts, the high-performance cruising yacht range designed by Michael Peters and built by Krogen Yachts, announces that it now offers the Summit 54 Motoryacht with optional Volvo Penta IPS propulsion. The first IPS version is currently under construction.

An IPS-powered Summit 54 MY represents the completion of one of the company’s long-held goals.
“When Summit was first conceived, there was always the intention of offering traditional shaft propulsion
along with Volvo’s IPS drives,” said Fran Morey, Production Manager for The Kadey-Krogen
Group, builder of Kadey-Krogen Yachts, Summit Motoryachts, and American Tug. “With IPS-power,
we’ll be able to offer a propulsion option for customers seeking a little more performance and efficiencies
than a traditional shaft-powered vessel.”

The Summit 54 MY optional power package will be twin 600-hp Volvo Penta IPS 800s, giving the vessel a company-estimated top speed in the upper 20-knot range. Standard power continues to be twin Cummins 542-hp QSB 6.7 diesels. Both power packages offer joystick control options and the ability for an additional station in the cockpit for close quarter maneuvering.

In addition to the increase in speed and performance, the IPS-powered Summit 54 will also feature a
Volvo Glass Cockpit with Garmin electronics, allowing seamless integration with engine, drivetrain, and
navigational system data, in addition to the Volvo interceptor trim-tab system. Tankage and engine room
layout will remain the same regardless of propulsion package. In order to keep the weight distributed
amidships, the company will employ jackshafts running from the D6 engines aft to the pod drives.

“This boat was designed from the ground up to offer both traditional and IPS, so implementing the
power package is a fairly seamless process,” Morey continued. “Working in conjunction with Volvo,
our in-house design team, along with renowned naval architect Michael Peters, was able to accommodate
the structural requirements of installing IPS with little to no effect on the vessel’s layout,
hull, or fuel capacity.”
The company will also offer the IPS package on its 54 Coupe model scheduled to launch in 2025.
