FINAL SPRINT OF VELUX 5 OCEANS SETS SAIL FROM CHARLESTON, USA
OCEAN sprint five, the final leg of the VELUX 5 OCEANS solo round the world yacht race, has got underway from Charleston, USA.
The starting gun sounded at 1500 local time (1900 UTC) and the four international solo sailors raced out of Charleston Harbor and bound for the North Atlantic and their ultimate goal, the finish line in La Rochelle, France.
It was Derek from Canada who led the fleet across the line, hotly pursued by Brad, Gutek then CSM. However, Spartan came from behind to round the mark first, followed by Derek, Gutek and Brad.
The 3,600-mile leg is the culmination of more than eight months of gruelling solo sailing through five of the world’s oceans. The first boat is expected to complete the leg in around 12 days.
